ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - EMILY HINER

EMILY HINER

A ceramic artist with dreams of owning her future studio space to create more ceramic wares.

Artist Statement

My name is Emily Hiner and I am a ceramicist. I love creating work that has a purpose. Whether it’s decorative or utilitarian, I would love to create it!

I will be entering my senior year at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, pursuing 3D Studio Art and Ceramic Majors.

The dream is to one day have my own store front where I make and sell my work to the public! I have a long way to go, but I am excited for the journey

The current goal is to sell my works in order to save up for my own wheel and kiln. This way I can be creating all the time!

Many of you have heard the story of how Emily Hiner became one of our gallery artists. For those of you who have not heard, here is the story of how a young girl conquered her fears and became the amazing young woman she is today.

Over four years ago a tall red-headed girl came into our gallery and introduced herself. Her name was Emily, and she was a student at LinnMar. She said she was taking art at school, and “How do I get my pottery into an art gallery such as yours?”

We are approached, almost on a monthly basis, by artists hoping to get their art into our gallery. But never by a high school student. We were intrigued though. So, of course we asked to see some of her work. It was good. Yes, just good. But not good enough. But we wanted to encourage her. So we talked with her art teacher and arranged to have an art show for her and three other art students from LinnMar. Emily sold a fair amount of pottery during that show. Some to friends and family of course, but also to new people. She was so happy and very enthused.

After the show and her artwork was removed, we kept in touch with each other. She brought us a horse-hair raku bowl as a thank you that I still have on my desk. But, as I said, we kept in touch and we saw her art evolve. Improvements and new techniques tried was a weekly thing for Emily. She was now at Kirkwood and loving her art teachers there. In a short time, we told her that we wanted her to be part of our permanent gallery of artists.

Emily Hiner then switched, with a scholarship, to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon to pursue a full degree. And that leads us to the purpose of where we are with this wonderful tale.

We want everyone to know that Ms. Emily Hiner is graduating from Cornell with a Bachelors in Studio Art. She and DKW Art Gallery want to invite you to her “Dream in Progress.” This is her Senior Art Exhibition at the Peter Paul Luce Gallery at McWethy Hall at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.

Her opening reception is Sunday, April 27th, 2-4pm.

The exhibition is open from April 25th to May 4th.

Many of you have pieces of Emily’s art. This is a chance to see her latest and to catch up with this dynamic young woman’s dreams.
